2023 Gulangyu Youth Piano Competition Regulations
发布时间 : 2023-03-11 In order to further promote the construction of Xiamen as a "Cultural Center, City of Arts and Island of Music" and to highlight the musical and cultural characteristics of Gulangyu Island, the 2023 Gulangyu Youth Piano Competition will be held in Gulangyu Island, Xiamen, China, a World Cultural Heritage Site, from July to October 2023.
The Competition Organizing Committee presided over the entire event. The competition jury consisted of world-renowned piano masters such as Dang Thai Son and Piotr Paleczny.
Participants are of any nationality and are open to all youth players between the ages of 12 and 32. The competition is divided into youth and junior groups, with the youth group being 17-32 years old (players born between July 20, 1991 and July 20, 2006); and the junior group being 12-16 years old (players born between July 21, 2006 and July 20, 2011). The competition was divided into three rounds: the preliminary round, the semi-final round and the final round. The preliminary round was selected in the form of selected video footage. The number of people who entered the semi-finals through the preliminary round was 30, including 12 in the youth group and 18 in the junior group. The number of finalists was 12, comprising 6 in the youth group and 6 in the junior group. The competition organizing committee is solely responsible for organizing the recording, video, television broadcast, internet distribution, awards, concerts and other related activities during the competition. All rights and interests of the audio-visual productions belong to the competition organizing committee and no additional remuneration will be paid to the contestants.
I. Registration and participation-related matters
There is no fee to enter this competition. Each participant must submit the following information by sending an email to kulangsupiano@163.com at
(i) Fill in the application form.
1. Please visit Xiamen Gulangyu Government website (http://gly.xm.gov.cn/) or Xiamen Gulangyu Culture and Tourism Development Center official website (http://www.glyylq.cn/) to fill in the application form.
2. An electronic application form and a printed signed and confirmed application form (photographed or scanned) must be submitted to close the application at 24:00 on July 20, 2023.
(ii) The following materials should be attached to the application form.
1.1 Recent electronic half-body photo (jpg. format, no less than 400 pixels) and 2 performance photos (for brochure printing, no less than 400 pixels), submission of the uploaded photos is considered as consent to the organizer's use of the participant's portrait rights in the relevant activities and publicity of the competition.
2. Electronic or scanned copy of your ID card or passport.
3. The Electronic version of your resume.
4. Video recordings of my recent performance of the complete repertoire, each piece of music can be recorded separately, video recordings must not be cut or edited, and the camera must not be moved during the recording.
5. The repertoire requirements are as follows.
(1) Youth group.
Video preliminary round repertoire requirements (15-25 minutes)
①Two virtuosic exercises, one of which is a Chopin exercise.
②Bach: Set of Preludes and Fugues for Piano in Twelve Mean Meters.
③One or two pieces of your choice (either Chinese or foreign music).
(Note) Two pieces, the technical etudes and Bach's Well Tempered Clavier, cannot be included in the semi-final repertoire.
(2) Junior group.
Video preliminary round repertoire requirements (15-20 minutes, repertoire can be the same as semi-finals and finals)
①A virtuosic exercise piece.
②One piece of Bach's three creative compositions.
③One or two pieces of your choice (either Chinese or foreign music).

Note: The registration form is considered invalid if it is not filled out clearly or if the attached materials are incomplete. Application materials are non-returnable, so please make your own copies of the application materials you send. The Competition Organizing Committee will keep the contestants' materials confidential and reserves the right to request additional materials.
(iii) The organizing committee of the competition organizes experts to make preliminary selection based on the registration materials in order to determine the eligibility of the applicants. The result of preliminary round will be notified by phone or email by August 20, 2023, and will also be posted on the Xiamen Gulangyu Government website:http://gly.xm.gov.cn/ and the official website of Xiamen Gulangyu Cultural Tourism Development Center: http://www.glyylq.cn/.
(iv) Players entering the semi-finals should arrive in Xiamen, China, by the morning of September 30, 2023, and report at the place designated by the competition organizing committee.
(v) The order of appearance of the participants will be decided by drawing lots in the afternoon of September 30, and the order drawn will be continued throughout the competition. Contestants must provide valid and accurate contact information for their entry. False or incorrect information may result in disqualification.
(vi) All competitions will be played from the back of the score. The order of the repertoire and the repetition of the pieces are at the discretion of the players.
(vii) Any changes to the participants' repertoire must be declared to the competition organizing committee before August 31, 2023. No changes to the repertoire are allowed during the competition.
(viii) On the day of the competition, participants must submit two copies of the music for the round.
(ix) The competition does not charge any fees, the travel, accommodation and transportation expenses of the participants and their accompanying persons are all self-supporting, the organizing committee provides a certain amount of travel allowance for the participants confirmed to participate in the semi-finals, as follows.
Participants from Europe, America, Oceania and Africa will receive a travel allowance of RMB 6,000 per person; participants from Asian countries, Taiwan, Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR will receive a travel allowance of RMB 4,000 per person; participants from mainland China (except Taiwan, Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR and Fujian Province) will receive a travel allowance of RMB 3,000 per person; participants from Fujian Province (except Xiamen City) will receive a travel allowance of RMB 2,000 per person.
II. Ranks and rewards
Winners will receive certificates, trophies and bonuses from the organizing committee. The bonuses are as follows.
(I) Youth Group
Gold Award: 60,000 RMB
Silver Award: 45,000 RMB
Bronze Award: 30,000 RMB
Finalist Award: 20,000 RMB＊3 people
(II) Junior Group
Gold Award: 40,000 RMB
Silver Award: 25,000 RMB
Bronze Award: 15,000 RMB
Finalist Award: 10,000 RMB＊3 people
Note: The above rewards are after-tax RMB figures.
III. Competition repertoire:
(I) Youth Group
1. Semi-finals:
Contestants entering this round must perform a maximum of 50 minutes of piano recital. Choose a repertoire of your choice. The repertoire for this round must include a complete sonata by one of the following composers (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven).
(Note) For the semi-finalists, the technical etudes and Bach's Well Tempered Clavier, cannot be included in the semi-final repertoire.
2. Final:
Finalists must play a piano concerto with orchestra, chosen from any of the following concertos:

(II) Junior Group
1. Semi-finals (20-25 minutes):
(1) Choose one Chopin or Liszt exercise of your choice.
(2) A complete classical sonata from Haydn or Mozart (without repeated sonata-style presentation parts).
(3) One or two pieces of your choice (Chinese or foreign music is allowed).
2. Final (25-30 minutes, repertoire must not be the same as the semi-finals).
Choose two or more different styles of your choice.
